The tournament consists of seven rounds; the draw of each of them takes place shortly before the scheduled date of the contest. Two top divisions representatives enter the competition in the second round. All teams play one match up to the final. 

As a rule, at the first stages of the tournament, representatives of top divisions go on a visit to weaker opponents. The final of the competition is traditionally played on the home field of “Feyenoord” in Rotterdam.
