The Coppa Italia History

The Coppa Italia is a national football cup tournament, which is annually held in Italy by the Serie A under the aegis of the Italian Football Federation.

History

The 1st Coppa Italia match was arranged in 1922. The 2nd Coppa Italia competition could take place in 1926/27, however, the tournament was interrupted after four rounds. Only since the 1935/36 season the Coppa Italia has been organized each year. In 1943 the Coppa Italia was discontinued again because of the Italy participation in the Second World War, and it was restored in 1958.

The Coppa Italia winner is entitled to wear a “cockade” (a round badge performed in colours of the Italian flag) on its uniform next season. This is a Cup equivalent of “scudetto” (the championship winner). Moreover, the Coppa Italia winner acquires a ticket to the UEFA Cup/Europa League next season.

“Juventus” may boast of the biggest number of the Coppa Italia trophies won (11). “Roma” participated in the competition finals more than others (16 times), “Torino” – 14, “Juventus” and “Inter” – 13 times each.

Over the Coppa Italia history there were 8 cases, when in one season one and the same team won the championship and the Cup competitions simultaneously: “Juventus” achieved this result thrice (in 1959/60, 1994/95 and 2014/15), “Internazionale” twice (2005/06 and 2009/10); “Torino” once (1942/1943), “Napoli” once (1986/1987) and “Lazio” once (1999/2000).

One should admit, though, that “Inter” won the championship in 2006 merely due to “Juventus” disqualification from the Serie A and “Milan” punishment as a result of the scandal associated with fixed matches.

1962 left a mark in Italian Cups history being the only year, when the trophy went to the team from Serie B – “Napoli”. In 1987 “Napoli” put itself on record again, having won all 13 Coppa Italia matches and having made an absolute record. “Fiorentina” managed to repeat this accomplishment in 1996.

In five out of six 2005–2010 finals of the Coppa Italia (in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010) “Inter” (Milan) and “Roma” (Rome) competed with each other. In 2005, 2006 and 2010 fortune smiled upon “Inter”, and in 2007, 2008 “Roma” won the Cup tournament.
