The Coupe de France Regulations

Official name: the Coupe de France (Coupe Charles Simon)
The number of participants: 7317 (in 2013/14 season)
General provisions
The Coupe de France is one of the world major football tournaments. Over 7000 clubs applied to participate in this Cup competition in 2013/14 season. It’s possible due to the fact, that in the 1930s the French Football Federation allowed amateur clubs take part in the Cup competition along with major leagues representatives. At the qualifying stage opponents are chosen with regard to their regional location. At the moment professional clubs join the tournament only 128 amateur teams are left.
Ligue 1 members enter the field at the final 1/32 stage. Traditionally major leagues representatives visit lower divisions members. Only one match is played at any tournament stage. Time is added and the penalty shootout is awarded if needed. Replay at Last eight, Last four and the final was in common practice earlier, however, this rule was cancelled in the 1990s.
Calendar
Opening qualifying round matches are held at the end of June. Teams from the same amateur leagues or even from the same city play one match each and move to the next tournament stage afterwards. The first group round (final 1/128) is conducted in November only, and professional clubs enter the contest no sooner than in the middle of December. The Coupe Charles Simon begins in January for Ligue 1 members. The Coupe de France final was usually carried out in May or June. Since 1998 finals have always been played at the Stade de France stadium.
Tournament rewards
The Coupe de France winner receives an exact replica of the original trophy and the secured berth at the Europa League 4th knockout round. In case the winning team ranks 1–4 in Ligue 1, the Coupe de France finalist goes to the Europa League. Unlike the winner the finalist starts from the 3rd knockout round. The Coupe Charles Simon holder will also participate in the Super Cup final. If the winner becomes a champion as well, the second Championship team enters the Super Cup final.
