he Taça da Liga is a relatively young annual competition, held among professional clubs of Portugal since 2007. Clubs from the two top divisions (Primeira Liga and Segunda Liga) of the country take part in the Taça da Liga.
The tournament was established in 2006 on the initiative of “Sporting” and “Boavista”. On November 28, 2006 representatives of all professional football league of Portugal clubs met in Porto to vote solidly for organizing the first ever League Cup.
The first Taça da Liga winner became “Vitória de Setúbal”, having overcome “Sporting Lisbon” on penalties (3-2) in the final match. “Benfica” won six out of seven succeeding contests. Since the establishment of the tournament, 40 clubs have participated in it.
