The EFL Cup

The EFL Cup, more commonly known as the League Cup or the Capital One Cup, is a tournament, organized among English football clubs of the top four divisions. The League Cup was established in 1980. 92 clubs participate in the competition.

The EFL Cup is not as prestigious as the FA Cup. It is explained, first of all, by the absence of the rich history and a lesser number of participants, than in the FA Cup. Perhaps that is why many clubs do not field starting XI during the League Cup and provide more chances for young players or those not always included into the starting eleven.

Under the tournament regulations matches are carried out according to the play-off system till the first loss. Similar to the FA Cup, if the game ends with a tie score, the replay takes place on the field of the team that played the away match. According to this system, they play before the semi-finals, where two matches on the fields of both opponents are played. The League Cup winner gets a ticket to the Europa League.

The most award-winning Football League Cup club is “Liverpool”, which has won 8 times here, the last one in 2012.
